- ELISABETH DORRIAN
Elisabeth Dorrian lives with her family in a small coastal town in Maryland, on the East Coast of the United States. She and her husband work as coastguards there, but Lis' passion is painting. She devotes herself more and more to this art which she expresses in folk style paintings which illustrate charming rural scenes inspired by the contemplation of nature and slow living. Lis tells us about her daily life, her work and her sources of inspiration... The work of the artist Elisabeth Dorrian is part of the lineage of painters of American Folk Art, an artistic movement which extended from the 18th century to the first half of the 19th century. Folk painters also called "Primitives", most of the time self-taught, traveled from farm to farm where they painted portraits of villagers at their request, representing them in their daily environment by highlighting their social success and their religious rigor. The Folk style approaches naive art and transcribes simple and colorful rural scenes. Lis Dorrian therefore chose this medium and this style to transmit the art of slow living to the 21st century and transcribe the unconditional beauty of Nature. Interview Hi Lis, can you introduce yourself quickly ? " Bonjour! I live in a small town in rural Maryland called Chesapeake Beach with my husband and two children. It’s surrounded by rolling hills on one side and the coastline on the other. We move often as my husband and I are in the Coast Guard (which moves us to a different state every few years). My dad was also in the Coast Guard, so I’ve moved all 41 years of my life. I love getting to experience so many different regions, cultures, and people of our country, but I would really love to live in Europe one day... " When and why did you decide to become a painter ? " I’ve always loved to draw. As a child, I spent hours drawing my own house blueprints, paper dolls, and homemade greeting cards (which my mom kindly bought for a quarter). I received a scholarship to attend an art school when I was 18; however, I chose the Coast Guard Academy instead to travel and see more of the world. After having children, I transitioned from active duty to the Coast Guard reserves and slowly began to draw and paint again. Now I do it nearly everyday! " Where did you learn painting ? " I took art classes in high school but consider myself a self-taught artist. I prefer gauche and acrylic when painting but I find myself working more and more on procreate because it’s so easy to take on the road. " What are your artistic influences ? " I’m inspired by the changing seasons, folk art, watching my children fall in love with the natural world around them. I’ve spent so much of my life adjusting to new places that I find my illustrations often center around a feeling of nostalgia too. " Your works are anchored in landscapes and countryside scenes. What do you like most about the countryside ? Which campagne inspired you the most ? " I love the countryside because it evokes slow, seasonal living. To me, slow living is about noticing and savoring the little things, like the way my daughter still reaches for my hand when we’re walking, or the first daffodils popping up, or lighting a candle for dinner… It’s about living more connected to nature, which is my happy place, and being more intentional with time. I love Mary Oliver’s poem, The Summer Day, and think about the last line often: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” I’m not sure if I have a favorite campagne, but I got to spend a week in the Cotswolds in England last year and fell in love! The rolling hills, stone villages, gardens, rambling books… it was perfection! " What are you other sources of inspiration ? " So many things! I keep a journal of poems and quotes that I’ve collected over the years. I also love browsing antique stores, vintage quilts, architecture, music, looking at the way people dress and put patterns together, a good book… I’m currently reading “Leaving Time” by Jodi Picoult and it’s phenomenal. I’m also very inspired by color. It’s normally the first thing that attracts me to something, whether it be art, clothing, a storefront… I love soft colors like french blue, sea foam green, pale pinks, and creamy yellows. " Who is your favorite painter? Is there French painter(s) you admire ? " How can I pick! As a child, I loved looking at my mother’s calendar by Grandma Moses, a wonderfully talented American folk artist who didn’t start painting in earnest until her seventies. Henri Matisse is another favorite of mine. I love his use of color in works like Landscape at Collioure but also loved his paper cut-outs phase. I also love Vincent Van Gogh. Green Wheat Fields (which is currently hanging in the National Gallery of Art about an hour from my house) may be one of my most favorite paintings! " . What is a typical day in Lis’s country life ? " I like to step outside first thing in the morning, no matter the season. We bought a fixer-upper on a piece of property surrounded by trees and wildlife. It’s been so fun to watch the seasons shift. We even had a fox den in our backyard this winter and watched six kits emerge in the spring. Since it’s summer and the kids are out of school, my days are currently a mix of raising children, work emails, contracts, drawing and painting, cooking, and cleaning, getting frogs out of the pool - but we take lots of breaks to swim, go for nature walks, and ride bikes. When I paint, it’s often a family affair as my children will work on their own paintings at the same time, so we all sit at the kitchen table working away. " Quels sont tes comptes Instagram favoris ? " I follow lots of home and garden accounts (like my favorite, Mastic Lifestyle!), homesteading accounts, and nature accounts. Mary Oliver's poetry is a constant source of inspiration. I’ve discovered so many amazing artists through Instagram as well like Vanessa Bowman, Monika Forsberg, Taryn Knight, Becca Stadlander, Sara Buscaglia, Lore Pemberton, Azurra Galtolo, Robin Pieterse and so many more! " What do you recommend to our readers to visit in Maryland ? " We live an hour or less from Washington D.C., Georgetown, and Annapolis. All of these cities have beautiful architecture, cobble-stone streets, and history. D.C. is known for its great museums, most of which are all free - including my favorite of course, the National Gallery of Art. Maryland is also known for its blue crab, so if you like seafood, you’re in luck." ↘ Instagram @elisabethdorrian crédit photos © elisabeth dorrian

- BESS PIERGROSSI
Bess Piergrossi lives with her husband on a small farm in Eliot, Maine, where they grow flowers and raise ducks, geese and chickens. They live in an old farm from the 1740s. Bess's life is simple: tending their gardens, picking flowers which she sells at the end of her driveway, reading, sewing and cooking. It's a simple and gorgeous life that thousands of people follow on her Instagram. After a first life in New-Jersey and New-Hampshire where she studied Health Management in Policy in school and started a career in health care, Bess found herself yearning for a career with more creative freedom. She spent several years working in restaurants to make ends meet, while pursing creative passions on the side, which is where she discovered her love for farming, and met her husband. She has spent the last 6 years or so working on farms- vegetable, dairy, flower farms, and the like. She currently has a corporate job in merchandising, but fill her free making bouquets out in the garden, tending to the ducks and chickens, and farming our their own land. Interview Bess, can you describe your county? Maine is an amazing place to live- we’re about ten minutes from the beach, close the mountains, about an hour away from two major cities. We live in a perfect corner of the state, where industry and opportunity is close by, yet the quiet country is short drive down the road. It’s not very remote, but there’s corners of our county that feel like you're a million miles away from the rest of the world. We’re lucky enough to live in one of these corners. Why did you choose this house? When we moved to Maine, I got a job working early mornings at a local dairy farm down the road before going to work. Luckily, or call it fate, the farmhouse on the dairy farm went up for sale a few years later, and I knew there was no other place I’d rather live. I fell in love with the location, the view, the history— everything. All I wanted to do was live closer to the cows, and that opportunity opened up for us. It was magical, really. What is your favorite object in the home? My favorite object in the home is probably the central chimney if that counts. Its in the center of the home-- we have two fireplaces coming off of it, one in the living room, and one in the dining room, and a wood stove in the kitchen. It offers a sense of warmth and grander that I find so welcoming. What is your favorite brand? I’m a sucker for ARQ underwear. The colors, the shapes, the fabric— its all so luxurious, yet simple. Its underwear, its a pajama, its my uniform in the heat— I just love the way it hugs my body. I also love Babaa sweaters. The smell of sheep, the timelessness of the designs, the quality—— I hope to collect more of them throughout the years. What is a typical day in Bess’s Country Life? As mentioned I do work 9-5 from my home, which is a luxury due to the pandemic. I often don’t leave the home for days, if not weeks at a time. On the weekends, I indulge in simple activities like baking, washing and sorting our eggs, making bouquets to scatter around the house, weeding the garden, or doing something creative like a puzzle or sewing a new dress. At night, my husband always cooks us a decadent meal, and I keep him company at the kitchen Island as we talk about our day, our dreams, and our future. . What are you inspirational Instagram Accounts? There are so many to mention. I love @RudyJude, @DevolKitchens, @farmandfolk, @homesweethomestead et @jerseyicecreamco. Those are some of my favorites. Why would you recommend our French readers visit Maine? There’s nothing like Maine. It’s such a unique experience— the rocky beach landscape, the salt water lobsters, the farmland and farmhouses yearning to be rescued— much of Maine remains untouched, although that is changing rapidly. No matter where in Maine you go, you’ll find beauty. There’s so much to be had! What is your favorite French Inspiration? If I had to choose a person ( I don’t know many in France) it would be Rachel Bakers and her home, @3_sources. She lives in the most beautiful home in the village of Provence, and I yearn to visit, go antiquing, and roam the cobblestone streets. French antiques are really my greatest inspiration though. I’d love to find the best secret spots and flea markets in France. We stopped in Paris for our honeymoon, which is just lovely, but I’m craving a visit to the countryside as well. I’d love to return someday soon. Thanks to Bess, who we will be delighted to welcome in Burgundy to show her the French countryside! ↘ Instagram @besspier I @hitchfootfarm crédit photos © besspier

- Exhibition : IMPRESSIONISM AND THE SEA
On the occasion of the celebration of 150 years of the birth of Impressionism, the Musée des impressionnismes in Giverny, located a stone's throw from Claude Monet's house in Eure, is organizing, from March 29 to June 30, 2024, an exhibition dedicated to the sea and entitled Impressionism and the sea. The title of Claude Monet's marine work, Impression, Soleil Levant, is the origin of the name of the Impressionist movement. In 1874, the art critic Louis Leroy published a scathing article on the exhibition organized by the group of avant-garde painters who were then seeking to translate their impressions onto canvas rather than following the codes of Academic Art. “I was also thinking, since I’m impressed by this painting, there must be some impression in there!” Following this pamphlet, artists took up the term “impressionist” to assume and claim their non-conformism: “Yes, we are impressionists”. Impressionist painters, fascinated by maritime landscapes and the specific light of Normandy or the Riviera, treated the sea from different angles: the leisure activities of the first seaside resorts on the flowery coast, the life of merchant ports, the maritime industry, the storms... The exhibition brings together 80 works by Monet, Manet, Gauguin, Manet, Pissaro and Signac, including the masterpieces La Vague by Courbet (1870, Orléans, Museum of Fine Arts) and L'Évasion de Rochefort by Manet (1881, Paris, Musée d'Orsay). At the same time, the museum is celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) by including 25 of his works in the exhibition.
